When the earth's temperature dropped six degrees during the Ice Age, a new breed of human, Homo Sapiens, developed alongside Neanderthal Man before wiping them out. Now, global warming has triggered a similar evolutionary event producing a new species of man, some of whom are capable of unspeakable evil, specifically the eradication of the human race. Intelligent, bold and vastly similar to humans in appearance, they manifest themselves in many ways -- from serial killer to the neighbor next door. In a life or death race, young bio-anthropologist Dr. Sloan Parker (Debra Messing) struggles to uncover the truth about this new group and their ultimate plan to win the battle for survival of the fittest.

Initially motivated by intellectual curiosity and the need to solve the murder of her mentor, Sloan confirms recent findings that a new life-form has arisen. Even as her quest for answers endangers her and those around her, Sloan struggles with the myriad emotions she feels towards this new species.

Sloan's quest brings her together with FBI Agent Tom Daniels (Adam Storke), nurturing a powerful attraction between them. However, Agent Daniels' access to the new beings adds an element of danger to this relationship.

Sloan is not alone in her work. Her friend and colleague, Dr. Ed Tate (Vincent Ventresca), a dedicated medical researcher, supports her efforts despite his constant concern for her safety. And Dr. Walter Attwood (Larry Drake), who heads the lab, soon reveals his interest in the new species is backed by a well-financed and very powerful secret organization.

In close pursuit of the lethal species, is street-wise police detective Ray Peterson (Frankie Faison) who puts his career in jeopardy when he becomes obsessed by the hunt. Little does he know, he is tracking the most formidable foe he will ever encounter.
